The Gadsden Flag

(1776)
From the American Revolution

The Gadsden flag is associated with Christopher Gadsden, who was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress. He presented a flag to the Provincial Congress of South Carolina on Friday, February 9, 1776. The journal of the South Carolina congress describes the flag as "an elegant standard, such as is said to be used by the commander-in-chief of the American navy; being a yellow field, with a lively representation of a rattlesnake in the middle, in the attitude of going to strike, and these words underneath, 'DONT TREAD ON ME!' The Magnolia Flag
(1861-1894)

The official flag of Mississippi during the War for Southern Independence (1861-1865) was a white flag with a magnolia tree in natural colors. The canton was blue and had a single white star (reminiscent of the Bonnie Blue flag). The fly was a thin red bar extending vertically the length of the flag; sometimes it included red fringe as well. The flag was so popular, it is the reason Mississippi became known as the "Magnolia State."    [ More Information ]

(from Miss. Code Ann., Section 37-13-7(1972)) is:
"I salute the flag of Mississippi and the sovereign state for which it stands with pride in her history and achievements and with confidence in her future under the guidance of Almighty God."
